A few weeks ago, after several years of service the New York City hidden treasure Asia closed its door. The West Village gem was an oddly unique venue creatively decorated with antique Italian furniture, while serving up French, Italian and American cuisine. Guest could often be entertained by grooving to the latest hip-hop,r&b and pop jams, while watching their favorite sports team or reality show on their multiple t.v screens. In the 8 years I have lived in New York City there was just no place like it. Asia was a great place to get $5 dollar drinks all night long, gourmet foods under $20 and a 4 course brunch that included complimentary wine, coffee or tea under $18. A free shot was also given to each guest that entered their doors daily. The staff was extremely friendly, from the Russian bar tender Olga, to the Spanish chef Juan who were often greeted by guest on a first name bases. Known for their famous $5 Mojitos and sea food pastas, Asia was a second home for me and countless others. I cannot begin to recall all of the monumental moments in my life that took place there. Asia was my place to grab a quick drink on my way out to a club, over indulge while catching up with friends, dinner date with that special someone or read and write while having a relaxing brunch alone. After Whitney Houston's funeral, feeling upset and devastated, I knew I could call my good friend Maya, who was also feeling the same way and head to Asia to grieve our loss of this icon together. In a city that is full of the new and trendy, the over rated and over crowed, it was good to have a place that felt as comfortable as my own home. Good bye Asia, thank you for your existence, you will be deeply missed!
